Chapter eleven

Tessa

Yannfar was seen to be a real place, which could be accessed by a certain door.

Dr. Theodore Black, A Study of the Irrayan Belief in Yannfar

Tessa hadn’t been expecting the warmest of welcomes when Jane answered the door. She thrust the flowers forward and said, “I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me.” She didn’t see Jane’s face until a hand came up and knocked the bouquet aside.

“You’re sorry? Is that it?” Jane’s eyes were swollen and red from crying. “You came back here with... flowers and expect me to...”

“And chocolate,” Tessa offered. She held up the bar to show Jane, but she had turned away.

“Go home, Tessa. I have enough to deal with right now, without phony apologies from you.”

Tessa ignored this and followed her into the kitchen. “Jane, please... I am sorry, I mean it. I never should have said those things. Where is Lut? I should...”

Jane whirled. “He’s gone. Are you happy now?”

Tessa stared at her, stunned. “Gone? Why would I be happy about that?”

“It’s what you wanted, wasn’t it? You couldn’t stand the thought that we might be getting along better that you and Jakob. So you had to open your big mouth and hit him in the one place he couldn’t handle it.” Jane slumped down at the table and put her face in her hands.

Tessa sat down beside her. “Oh, Jane... I’m so, so sorry.”

“I know, you keep saying it, but it isn’t going to change anything, is it?” Jane started to cry again.

Tessa felt her spirits, which had been lifted by Ellie’s unexpected news, sink into the dust. “Tell me what happened. There must be something I can do to fix this.” She got up and found a box of tissues.

Jane blew her nose. “After you left, I could tell Lut was upset, but he didn’t say anything, just went out after the sheep. He stayed away a long time and I thought... well, he just needed some time alone. When he finally came back he said he had to find Jakob right away. I tried to talk to him, but he went out the door without another word. Then about half an hour later he returned.”

“He couldn’t find him, right? Joe said he’d been by and had left a message.”

She raised an eyebrow at this. “He must have. They were together when he got back. Lut told Jakob to wait in the lounge, and then he came in here. I was making coffee. He said...” Jane had to take several breaths before she could continue. “He said that you were right. And that he couldn’t stay here any longer.”

“But why didn’t you stop him? He should have known I didn’t mean any of it. It was just me being awful.”

She stared at the crumpled piece of tissue in her hand. “I argued, of course. But you know how Lut is when he has his mind made up. There is no shifting him.”

“So then what happened?”

“I followed him back into the lounge. Jakob stood there, looking miserable as usual, with that ridiculous sword strapped to his back.
