Chapter eleven
Tessa
Yannfar was seen to be a real place, which could be accessed by a certain door.
Dr. Theodore Black, A Study of the Irrayan Belief in Yannfar
Tessa hadnât been expecting the warmest of welcomes when Jane answered the door. She thrust the flowers forward and said, âIâm sorry. Please donât hate me.â She didnât see Janeâs face until a hand came up and knocked the bouquet aside.
âYouâre sorry? Is that it?â Janeâs eyes were swollen and red from crying. âYou came back here with... flowers and expect me to...â
âAnd chocolate,â Tessa offered. She held up the bar to show Jane, but she had turned away.
âGo home, Tessa. I have enough to deal with right now, without phony apologies from you.â
Tessa ignored this and followed her into the kitchen. âJane, please... I am sorry, I mean it. I never should have said those things. Where is Lut? I should...â
Jane whirled. âHeâs gone. Are you happy now?â
Tessa stared at her, stunned. âGone? Why would I be happy about that?â
âItâs what you wanted, wasnât it? You couldnât stand the thought that we might be getting along better that you and Jakob. So you had to open your big mouth and hit him in the one place he couldnât handle it.â Jane slumped down at the table and put her face in her hands.
Tessa sat down beside her. âOh, Jane... Iâm so, so sorry.â
âI know, you keep saying it, but it isnât going to change anything, is it?â Jane started to cry again.
Tessa felt her spirits, which had been lifted by Ellieâs unexpected news, sink into the dust. âTell me what happened. There must be something I can do to fix this.â She got up and found a box of tissues.
Jane blew her nose. âAfter you left, I could tell Lut was upset, but he didnât say anything, just went out after the sheep. He stayed away a long time and I thought... well, he just needed some time alone. When he finally came back he said he had to find Jakob right away. I tried to talk to him, but he went out the door without another word. Then about half an hour later he returned.â
âHe couldnât find him, right? Joe said heâd been by and had left a message.â
She raised an eyebrow at this. âHe must have. They were together when he got back. Lut told Jakob to wait in the lounge, and then he came in here. I was making coffee. He said...â Jane had to take several breaths before she could continue. âHe said that you were right. And that he couldnât stay here any longer.â
âBut why didnât you stop him? He should have known I didnât mean any of it. It was just me being awful.â
She stared at the crumpled piece of tissue in her hand. âI argued, of course. But you know how Lut is when he has his mind made up. There is no shifting him.â
âSo then what happened?â
âI followed him back into the lounge. Jakob stood there, looking miserable as usual, with that ridiculous sword strapped to his back.
